 Recognition

Leuven student associations can be recognized by LOKO under certain conditions. Recognized associations enjoy a number of interesting benefits.

Deadlines

The deadline for a recognition application is April 1 in the second semester. If you submit your application after this date, it will only be processed in the next academic year.

Also, keep in mind the dates on which the subsidy committee meets. Make sure to submit your application at least one week before the meeting at which you want your application to be assessed.

What is a recognition at LOKO?

LOKO recognizes associations to support the Leuven student association landscape. Different types of recognition offer a number of benefits. For example, you can more easily (and for free) reserve rooms from KU Leuven, you can use the LOKO lending service, and you can apply for various subsidies.

Student unions are automatically recognized and therefore do not need to apply for recognition.

For other student associations that are not student unions (free associations), there are three options:

What are the conditions?

The recognition at LOKO requires that at least the following conditions are met. The association applying for recognition:

  1. must be aimed at Leuven students.
  2. is open to all Leuven students.

    1. open as in for both local and international students (in the form of, for example, accessible, for example, bilingual communication where possible) and accessible to both KU Leuven students and students from UCLL and LUCA.
    2. open as in at least one public event on Facebook or a post on a public Instagram page, and in terms of promotion not limited to a restricted group.
  3. makes no distinction between students who do or do not want to become members of the requesting recognized association (no financial barrier)
  4. must not be profit-making.
  5. is active and has had at least two recognized events in the past 365 days.
  6. actively and objectively works on their member recruitment.
  7. respects the poster regulations for posters on KU Leuven grounds.
  8. has a goal that is in accordance with the general principles that LOKO radiates.
  9. signs and defends the baptism charter. Every recognized association must sign the baptism charter. If they do not baptize, they must also sign a document for this.
  10. endorses human rights (European Convention on Human Rights) and anti-discrimination legislation.
  11. pursues the promotion of coexistence with the residents of Leuven.

Even if an association meets all the requirements, its recognition can still be denied. The subsidy committee must also look at a balanced distribution of the association landscape, and can therefore refuse recognition if the association has a goal that is too similar to the goal of another existing association, does not have a sufficiently valuable social purpose, or for any other reason it deems justified.
